What Is That Stuff? Flourine

1. Why do some people disapprove of adding fluoride to drinking water?     Some people think that high levels of fluoride in drinking water is bad for you. It has also been linked to causing some bone cancers. Even though it prevents tooth decay it also stains teeth and can turn teeth yellow/brown. Fluoride can severely damage the teeth of young kids. People fear that fluoride can also damage parts of the brain.  2. What would your position be on adding fluoride to drinking water and why?  I think that it is too dangerous to mess with people’s health and try and add fluoride. If you add fluoride to drinking water you are putting people at risk to get bone cancer. You are also putting babies at risk for damaging there teeth. The fluoride has too many risks and only a small gain of preventing tooth decay that it is not worth it.   3. What technological advances in toothpaste had to be made before fluoride could be widely used in toothpaste and mouthwashes?     Procter and Gamble was the first company to find a fluoride-abrasive combination that worked, pairing stannous fluoride with calcium pyrophosphate. Colgate came out with another fluoridated toothpaste. In 1982 they came out with Advanced Formula Crest, that uses a hydrated silica abrasive that doesn’t hinder sodium fluoride dissociation.  4. What side effects of using fluoride in drinking water are of most concern to you? Why?  I think that the biggest concern is that it may cause some bone cancers. That can be a serious issue and chances should not be taken when it comes to my health.
